Job Description:
The Second Mate is responsible for the loading and discharging of cargo and ballast; for communication with terminal, refinery or dock representatives and with cargo inspectors' and for the safe navigation of the vessel during the assigned watch.  The Second Mate is responsible for following all standing orders, written and verbal instructions, in accordance with regulatory and labor agreement requirements, as provided by the Master or Chief Mate.  The Second Mate reports to, and is directed by the Master and Chief Mate.  The Second Mate is responsible for following all orders and instructions pertaining to the loading, discharging and maintenance of deck and safety equipment.  The Second Mate assists in the supervision, training and evaluation of all persons in the Deck department.

This position requires a minimum of a limited USCG Merchant Mariners Second Mate License for motor vessels of size of no less than 1600 GT / 3000 ITC; valid TWIC card; valid passport; valid MMD (Zcard); STCW training.
